7 Questions to Ask a Truck Driver Training School Before Enrolling

So, you're thinking about starting a career as a professional truck driver. You've probably searched the Internet to find out how to go about doing just that, and now you're at the point where you're deciding which truck driver training school is best for you. At first glance it may seem that, from the outside, they are all pretty much the same. However, if you're sure to pay close attention and ask the right questions, you'll quickly come to learn the differences. If you ask these 7 questions, you'll be able to separate the good from the bad.

What is their student to instructor ratio?

Here at Southwest Truck Driver Training, we offer small class sizes, and even have one on one instruction available. Small class sizes at truck driver training schools are especially important when it comes time to get behind the wheel. You don't want your instructor's attention being divided between two, or even three trucks. If he's off watching a guy in the next lot over, he is less likely to catch you making a mistake, which could eventually lead to you developing bad habits behind the wheel.

Do they train for all carriers?

SWTDT is a private school, which means that our graduates are free to choose employment with an array of trucking companies. We are not contracted with any one school, which means we will not be trying to influence your decision one way or another. When we assist you in finding a job, we will help you select the company that best suits you.

How experienced are their instructors?

Our instructors all have various driving backgrounds, and are there to impart their experience and wisdom on new students. They will not only teach you the ins and outs of trucking, but also how to be a professional in this environment. Companies today aren't just looking for warm bodies to fill their driver's seats. They want to know that their drivers will conduct themselves respectfully and professionally as long they are representing their company.

How much time will you get to spend behind the wheel?

One common misconception is that you'll get less behind-the-wheel time if you aren't getting one on one instruction. This isn't true. Any time you spend as a passenger in one of our trucks while other students get their practice in does not count towards your personal driving time. Additionally, you may find it difficult and frustrating at first. Sometimes it is helpful to have a break while someone else gets their practice in; you get to mentally regroup, and may even learn a thing or two from the guy behind the wheel.

Do they offer on-site 3rd party testing?

SWTDT is licensed for 3rd party testing, which means you get to conveniently complete your classroom, driving, and testing portions all in one place. This means you'll be able to get to work even faster, since you won't be having to waste time waiting around in a busy government building.

What if I'm struggling?

You wouldn't be the first student to have trouble with getting through CDL training, so don't feel bad. In the instance that you feel like you need extra time with an instructor, we are happy to help you with whatever aspect you're struggling with. We want to pass on confident and competent students into the world of trucking, and it is important to us that you are successful.

Do they offer job placement assistance?

At SWTDT, we offer lifetime job placement assistance. We have built relationships with and positive reputations among many different carriers over our 16 years in business. This benefits you because it means you have more decision-making power when it comes to who you work for. Here, the student is the most important person on campus. We are in business because of you, and we want you to go on to a successful career. It is for this reason that (while it's extremely rare in this industry) should you ever be laid off, you can come to us and we will help you find employment.

When it comes to your career, you don't want to make mistakes that you'll be paying for down the road. Do it right the first time, and you'll be more successful because of it. Since Southwest Truck Driver Training opened its doors 16 years ago, we have been committed to giving our students a positive experience as they embark on their new career. Get started on the right foot, and call us at one of our three locations today!
